Sinus Lift in Jerusalem
Sinus Lift is a medical procedure that simulates bone augmentation and is often performed prior to dental implantation treatments. In some cases, implants can be placed without a sinus lift; however, when there isn’t enough bone to support the implant, a sinus lift surgery becomes necessary, particularly in the upper jaw before beginning the implantation process.
What is a Sinus Lift?
The sinuses are cavities located within the facial bone structure on both sides of the nose. When a dental implant is needed in the upper jaw, there might not always be sufficient bone to support it. A sinus lift procedure raises the sinus floor and increases the bone volume in the area, creating enough space and stability for the dental implant to be securely placed.
There are two primary types of sinus lift procedures: an open sinus lift, which is reserved for more complex cases, and a closed sinus lift, suitable for simpler situations.
Open Sinus Lift
This procedure is performed when there is a significant lack of bone volume. During the surgery, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon creates an opening in the upper jaw to inject a special bone-like material. Depending on the case, dental implants may be placed during the same procedure, or the area may be closed to allow time for healing before continuing with the implant process. After a recovery period of several months, the treatment resumes with the placement of crowns on the implants.
Closed Sinus Lift
This procedure is less invasive and is used when only a small increase in bone volume is required. A smaller opening is made, and the sinus floor is gently lifted through the implant site. Bone augmentation material is then introduced, and in most cases, the implant is placed during the same procedure. Recovery from a closed sinus lift is typically short, lasting just a few days.
Sinus Lift: Side Effects
Sinus lift treatment in Jerusalem is a surgical procedure, and while some patients may fear pain or potential side effects, it is actually very safe and boasts a high success rate. To minimize the risk of infection, it’s recommended to undergo a tartar removal treatment a few weeks before the sinus lift to thoroughly clean the area.
The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia (in rare cases, general anesthesia may be used). As a result, the surgery itself is painless. After the procedure, as the anesthesia wears off, some discomfort or mild pain may occur, which can be managed with the painkillers recommended by your dental clinic team.
Rare side effects include:
- Hemorrhages around the treated area
- Light nasal bleeding or swelling
These side effects usually resolve on their own within 7 to 10 days.
If additional side effects occur, signs of infection appear, or prescribed painkillers are ineffective, contact your dental clinic immediately for further advice.
